Paola Volpi, who was born, works and lives in Rome, transforms silver and alternative materials into avant-garde, unique jewellery with a subtle, confidant and audacious approach to her handcrafted Italian pieces.

Before she started to design her successful collections worn by TV personalities and actresses including Asia Argento, she used to work as a stage costume designer. Nowadays her unique jewellery is often used in stage and opera productions, as well as in several movies.

Part of her creative process is to carefully consider weight, surface and consistency of materials. Nylon, electrical cable, elastics, pvc and zippers are combined in an original and harmonious way with pearls, crystals, gold and silver to create a strong connection between traditional design, her affection for Baroque Rome and her passion for modern creations.

With her individual approach, always searching for unusual materials, forms and combinations, Paola was able to carve out for herself an unique position in the world wide panorama of costume jewelry.

So, keen for Paola to become a part of Fourth Crusade, We set up an appointment to meet with her. Waiting in her small store which is much more of a gallery space that she often utilises to create quirky displays she swanned in with a beautiful grace despite the stifling Roman summer’s heat. Her big curly ash hair, neat blue jeans, crisp, tailored white shirt and silver Birkenstock sandals were evident that the lives and breathes class. Her smile and incredible passion for her artworks is evident as soon as she begins to speak and as we chatted over a prosecco in Piazza Farnese, it was soon clear that she is incredibly selective as to who she will allow to retail her pieces.

Aside from her boutique in Rome, Paola currently has her jewellery on offer at the MoMa Store in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, La Pedrera in Barcelona and the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome - the very gallery that housed the Bulgari 125 years of Italian Jewellery exhibition this year.
